[ARCHIVED] New Traffic Pattern Will Ease Congestion on MD 355 in Bethesda

MD 355-JBR SIGNAL HANDOUT---092116_Page_2.jpg

UPDATE: Forecasted thunderstorms for Thursday night (September 29) has led to a rescheduling of work necessary to activate the new left turn signal on MD 355 (Rockville Pike) at Jones Bridge Road. Weather permitting, the work will performed overnight, Monday October 3 from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. making the new signal active for afternoon rush hour between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4. SHA will also conduct outreach regarding the change. Electronic message boards near the work zone alerting motorists of the new traffic pattern have been changed to reflect this new date.

Currently, the southbound traffic pattern at Jones Bridge Road includes three through travel lanes and one dedicated left turn lane. The upgraded signal adds a fiber optic sign over the third through lane. On weekends and weekdays between 6 p.m. and 3 p.m., drivers traveling southbound on MD 355 will use the three through travel lanes and one left turn lane, as currently designed.

During the afternoon rush hours between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. the overhead sign will display a left turn only arrow, to indicate that the lane should be treated as a left-turn only lane. The traffic signal enhancement is part of intersection projects associated with BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) improvements in Montgomery County.

Those who have questions about this project may contact the SHA District 3 Traffic Office at 301-513-7409 or by e-mail at shad3trafficteam@sha.state.md.us. Drivers should remain alert and look out for other drivers and pedestrians traveling in the intersection.
