How It Will Work


The Compost Crew will provide each participating household with an airtight bin and compostable bags. Each household only needs to separate organic waste, just as we already do with our plastics and paper, and to leave the composting bin by your refuse/recycling bins on the designated day of the week. The waste will be processed at a composting facility in Maryland. After six months of service, each household can request that a portion of its contributed waste be returned in the form of rich, finished compost or nutrient-rich soil if desired.

Pursuant to Section 10-6 of the Chevy Chase Village Code, all receptacles for the disposal of household garbage, trash and recyclable materials must be left for collection at the rear of the dwelling unit (no curbside collection).

What Can Be Composted


As a rule of thumb, anything that grows or is made from the earth can be placed in a compost bin. This includes meat, dairy, vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds and filters, tea and tea bags, egg shells, breads and other grains, napkins, paper towels, pizza boxes, dryer lint, etc. By diverting the compostable portion of our solid waste away from the landfill and returning nutrients to our soil and food system, we significantly reduce our carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. How Much It Will Cost


Thanks to the over 40 residents that have already signed up, the price for subscribing has dropped to only $20/month or you can sign-up for a full year for $222/year. All services will be directly billed by The Compost Crew to the participating household.
